Merino Collection

Naturally breathable merino wool socks for warmth without bulk

Merino wool regulates temperature in both directions — warm on cold days, cool when you're active — and manages moisture better than cotton or synthetic blends. Every pair in this OEKO-TEX certified, non-mulesed collection is soft against the skin, breathable, and made for all-day wear in trainers, shoes, and boots.

Knitted in a family-run mill in Portugal, from ankle to boot length, merino is the natural choice when you want warmth without the bulk of heavier fibres.

How merino handles heat and sweat

Merino fibre has a natural crimp — a fine, springy waviness that traps warm air against the skin when you are cold, then opens up and breathes as you warm. That is why one merino sock copes with a cold platform and a warm office in the same morning, where a thicker sock only solves half the day.

It handles moisture differently from synthetics too. Wool absorbs water vapour into the core of the fibre — close to a third of its own weight before it feels wet to the touch. The sweat ends up inside the fibre rather than pooling against your skin, which is why merino feels dry long after a cotton sock has given up. Its surface is also naturally hostile to the bacteria that cause odour, so you can wear a pair more than once between washes.

Non-mulesed, always

Every gram of merino we use comes from non-mulesed sheep, with no exceptions. Mulesing is a surgical procedure in which strips of skin are cut from around a lamb's hindquarters, typically without pain relief, to prevent flystrike. We buy instead from farms that manage that risk through breeding and land management. It costs more. We think that is the point — the full explanation is on our fibres page.

A note on sock yarn and wool content

Sock yarns are rarely pure wool, and that is deliberate rather than a compromise on quality. Wool on its own has limited recovery, so a sock knitted from it alone loses its shape, slides down and wears through at heel and toe. A proportion of nylon or elastane is what keeps a sock fitting and lasting. Each product page lists what is in that particular pair, so you can check before you buy rather than taking a collection-level claim on trust.

Merino Sock Questions

Merino or alpaca?

Both are natural, both wick, both resist odour — they solve slightly different problems. Merino is the better all-rounder for changeable, active days, because it regulates temperature in both directions. Alpaca gives more warmth for its weight and pushes moisture out rather than absorbing it, which suits boots and long hours with no airflow. If your feet run hot, start with our guide to socks for sweaty feet; if you are comparing against cashmere, we have set that out too. Or browse the alpaca collection.

Caring for merino socks

Wash cool on a gentle cycle, ideally in a net bag, and dry flat rather than tumbling. Because merino resists odour, you will be washing them less often than you expect. Full instructions are on the care guide.
